The Palladian-style main house is well known in Palm Beach for having been the longtime home of the late Jean Matthews, who founded the Flagler Museum to honor the legacy of her grandfather, Henry M. Flagler.

The Spanish-style guesthouse next door was designed in 1923 by the architectural firm Harvey & Clarke, whose work included Palm Beach Town Hall. The house has its own gardens and swimming pool.

Over the years, they carried out extensive renovations and additions, preserving the main house’s Cuban-marble and wood floors, converting its original garage into a media-and-family room and restoring the original foyer, living room and library.

Wyeth had designed the main house for New York City banker E. Clarence Jones and his actress wife, Margaret Seely Blossom, the widow of author and playwright Henry Martyn Blossom.

Jean Matthews had acquired the house in the 1940s and sold it in 1975, four years before her death at age 68.

196 Banyan Road

“La Loma,” is one of John Volk’s most important Palm Beach estates. In 1929, when Volk was commissioned to build this grand three story Mediterranean Revival home, he chose to raise the elevation of the property to make the home stand out from Addison Mizner’s nearby Mediterranean Revival homes. The extraordinary detail and beauty of the home and stunning grounds make this home a truly one of a kind Palm Beach residence.
